In the past, this was either pitch or rayon; however, today the majority of carbon fibers are made of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is produced from the chemicals used in everyday life, ammonia and propylene.

Carbon fibers can be heated in order to increase their tensile strength and modulus of elastic. It can also be machined to create holes and voids which reduce its tensile strength, but increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation. This protects it from rust. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means it is less likely to change its shape due to exposure to heat. Carbon fiber has better endurance properties than metal, so it will last longer.

One of the most popular uses of carbon fiber is the tailplanes and fuselages of aircrafts. The strength and lightness of the material has allowed designers to design planes that are safer and more efficient than they have ever been.
