They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, including paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has progressed. The cancers can become resistant to treatment and then recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy.
