The robots also feature Carpet Boost, a feature which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very well in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a good deal for those whose home or office has a lot of bare floors and you want to save money. It's also extremely quiet and operates when you're at work or in school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can mop floors. Its smart cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robotic hoover for carpets, but it's not as good as other hoovers in terms of deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensor technology that can avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time to provide better cleaning. You can alter the schedule of cleaning and even customize zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach beneath furniture with low levels and along baseboards. Its obstacle detection was top notch and it swiftly eluded fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky units of the competitors. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has a simple mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also a bit costly however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and a little more cost this is a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that help you forget your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and cleans and drys mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home depending on the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you have a larger home, it's worth selecting a model with a spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned by using the app or voice control. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also useful. Finally, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot automatic vacuum cleaner to pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than the price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad and a reciprocating movement that is more efficient than most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, set up the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It can also reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has an impressive 8000 Pascal suction and clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also organize a spot-cleaner that thoroughly cleans a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and cheaper alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, however it is more likely to get caught on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we've test. It also has an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
