Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's stats base increase when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all of its upgraded advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It is also used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is limited to the lower levels). Players can see their average level of item upgrader mod on their character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the levels of the item. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and how much damage it will be capable of causing. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done using the level of the item.

On your PC, you can check the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory suggests that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine the worth of an item's stats actually are. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values, and also that sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This process could result in a calculated amount for the item's level, which is usually close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, since the level of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, such as by adding a level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher value.

Item Stats

The item level upgrade's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The stats of a base weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modifications that are in turn boosted by the player's level.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which stats to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it is an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll affixes, or choose which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would have to be carried out on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of the properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is more advantageous for early game runs, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading that increase with each item level. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck, or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be outfitted to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.

The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an item upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. Each item has a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade item overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
