If mesothelioma does not have spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
