With a sleek circular design that appears more like a normal Roomba than the competition's compact models this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. The latest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot cleaner with mop that is able to wash mop pads).

It's also the only robot cleaner with mop vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an intuitive mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on the degree of dirt they are.

If you have a bigger home, it's worth choosing a model that has zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to inform the robot of which area of your house needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stair mode can be useful if you have a lot furniture. Also, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is great for busy families.

It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
