Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the sum of an item upgrading's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be changed in order to upgrade an item.

It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear, since PvP is limited at lower levels. The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a useful indicator of an item's quality and the amount of damage it's capable of causing. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller can be done using the item level.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its level. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the item level is determined. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines how much an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that various perks have different value and gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl since the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modification, which are themselves enhanced by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. A white or grey item for instance, will only be upgraded one time however, items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can be used to give the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circles arrows. This will cost a specific amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade item gauges as with other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade an item to specific stats, or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges of an item are determined by the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it is a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid.

This is another aspect that could be altered by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes or deciding which stats to increase. As with the base equipment, this must be done per item and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The luck of an item can influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25 percent and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects can be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
