There are also models that clean and charge on their own, a feature that may be beneficial for those with pets or children. The top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin as it gets full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface dirt on carpets and hard floors and are able to maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home, which help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots that we tested the i3+ does not have any obstacle-avoidance features, so it may be stuck on things like power cords or socks, and it can have difficulty navigating across surface transitions like from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot recommends clearing areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, including getting rid of any toys or clutter it may come across. Also, keep the dustbin and filters free of dirt to prevent them from getting blocked. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or its battery is low it will return to its docking station and automatically emptying its dirt into the station's dust bin and continues cleaning where it started. The battery's lifespan is around an hour and a half of constant usage. It takes three hours to charge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is a top rated robot vacuum model from iRobot’s flagship line, and it comes with the most recent features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is the self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ can make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and direct your robot by voice or through the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from any surface including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin which eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot vacuum cleaner sale to start, stop or pause its cleaning routines and to move around the room and sweep an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After connecting to these services, we were able use the i7+'s voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a world of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households and can fit in well next to a coffee table or on the bookshelf, where you can wave it around like the magic wand.

The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces fade-free power for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system traps allergens and releases cleaner air back into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpets to trap large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction settings to suit the task being performed. It swiftly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum and back again.

This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also gives an easy access to two attachments and the Wand. This is a significant improvement over earlier Dysons models, which require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its limited running time. Its claims on the market that it has up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is an average, not an exceptional, time for a battery-powered cordless vac. This is enough time to vacuum the average-sized home but not enough to reach every area. (A second time generally works). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is noticeable superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in an expensive robot. It's capable of sucking up all debris types and sizes during our tests, and frequently goes over the same areas multiple times to get a really thorough clean. Its flat front end helps to get into corners and along the walls' edges and walls, which is a nice addition.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it lacks the mapping capability of more sophisticated models such as our top picks and the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It can get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi best budget robot vacuum is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 because it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower cost of recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and can better move itself. It also has a larger dustbin and charges quicker.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba. It also has physical boundaries and can be controlled with the voice assistant on your smartphone. It also feels better-built and has a more powerful motor, and is able to perform better on floors that are bare and carpets with low pile, while offering a wider range of features for automation.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in the field of home electronics. It's no surprise, then, that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has an advanced onboard technology that allows to navigate and avoid obstacles.

The app offers a variety of customization options for your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior adjustments, docking frequency settings and more. The app is easy to navigate and use similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). However, it wasn't particularly well in avoiding higher-up objects like cords or socks which was a disappointment. It's priced higher than other models that we tested, and this could be a deterrent for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. The app also makes it easy to manually steer the robot in the event of need. For example, my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to cause confusion for other robots I've tried. The HRV 425BL however was able to continue to move across the border, without notifying the edge. The ability to program weekly cleaning schedules is a fantastic time-saving feature.
