There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature that is essential for families with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests also offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling, the i3 EVO, are identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ a good option for those looking for an automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots excel at cleaning up surface debris from hard floors and carpets, and they are very good at maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ isn't able to feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we have test. It may be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like hardwood and rug.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, which includes clearing out any toys or clutter it may encounter. It's also a good idea to keep the dustbin and filter clean so they do not become blocked by dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is filled or the battery is depleted it goes back to its docking station, automatically emptying its trash into the station's external dustbin and then resumes cleaning where it started. The battery's lifespan is around an hour-and-a-half of continuous usage. It takes about three hours to fully charge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and is packed with the latest technology. It has self-charging and self-navigating, but the most significant feature is the self-emptying bin. This eliminates the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that allows it to create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot Sweeper using voice or via the app.

In our tests, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surface types including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying bin that eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot hoover on how to begin or stop cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room, and to vacuum a particular area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. When connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a sea of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for many households however, it can also fit nicely on a coffee table or on shelves where you can move it around like the magic wand.

The V10 is powered with a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that produces power without fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system captures allergens and expels clean air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large dust or crumbs. It has three different suction modes that can be adapted to suit the task. It quickly converts from floor vac to handheld vacuum and back again.

This model also has a dock that charges to 100% in about 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments and a wand clip. This is a significant improvement over earlier Dysons, which take a long time to charge and are a pain to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. The claims of its marketing that it has up to 60 minutes of run time are misleading as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical, not an exceptional, time for the battery-powered cordless vacuum. This is still enough to vacuum the majority of an average-sized house, but not quite long enough to get every single spot (though a second run-through usually does the trick). However, this model isn't a good choice: It's lighter and agile than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is noticeably better on low-pile carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of the most well-known robot vacuums the 694 is an affordable model that's an excellent choice for people who don't want to spend too much on a robot. It could pick up most types of debris in our tests and would often go over the same area several times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it lacks the mapping capability of more sophisticated models like our top selections, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. As a result, it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it often runs out of battery power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694, as it has less parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation abilities and is better able to navigate its own. It also has a bigger dustbin, and charges more quickly.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, because it has a longer battery life, has the ability to alter its suction power mode manually and comes with physical boundary strips, and is controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It's also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and performs better on floors with low pile and bare.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in home electronics. It's not surprising, then, that they are one of the top makers of robot vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has the most advanced onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app provides a range of customization options for your robotic vacuum cleaner best cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior customizations docking frequency settings, and more. The app is easy to use and understand similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It was not as successful in avoiding taller items like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's priced higher than other models we've tested and this could be a problem for some buyers.

The app lets you access the onboard camera of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's area of cleaning. This feature allows you to check in on pets or children when you're away from home. The dustbin and the filter can be cleaned to ensure a quick, painless clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with self-emptying clean stations, which helps to keep the robot's bin clear and optimizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker robot broom Vacuum

Contrary to other robotic vacuums which are designed for both hard floors and carpets, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. The robots have an extra-wide cleaning path and a dustbin that is 2 times larger than other models. This allows them to clean the area for longer. Additionally, they come with two side sweepers that clean around edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which can tell whether it's picking up dirt or debris on the surface and then automatically adjusts its power level. It also includes a smart application that lets you see the virtual map and control the functions and schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum's battery and then return it to its dock to charge at the touch of one button. The app lets you modify the LEDs on the top of the vacuum so that you can tell where it is focused or if it's stuck.

The app allows you to steer the robot manually in the event of need. For instance my living room rug has a darkly colored border that has a tendency to trip up some of the other robots I've tried. However the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as a cliff. Also, the ability to create the weekly cleaning schedule is a great time-saving convenience.
