A biopsy is the removal the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as if it is epithelioid, sarcomatoid or biphasic.

The doctor might recommend the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the prognosis for patients.
