The process starts with a pre-cursor of polymers that is the molecular base for carbon-rich fibers. Historically, this was either pitch or rayon; however, today, the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is derived from the commodity chemicals propylene and ammonia.

Once carbon fiber has been produced and shaped, it can be used to shape and layered into composite materials to make many different products. The strength and stiffness of the material can be controlled by changing the temperature at which it is processed. For instance carbon fibers can be heated to increase its tensile strength as well as modulus of elasticity. It can also be machinized to create holes and voids. This reduces the tensile but increases the modulus of elasticity.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation, thereby protecting it from damage caused by corrosion. It has a lower coefficient than metal and therefore is less likely to alter its shape when exposed to heat. The properties of fatigue are superior to those of metal therefore, carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

Carbon fiber is used in the tailplanes and the fuselage of aircraft. The strength and lightweight weight of the material allow designers to design aircrafts that are more efficient and safer than before.
