Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist impulses. It's still better than expected.

The country is seeking an entirely new model of development. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for the ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. But there are signs that a secular culture is gaining ground.

Origins

During prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops such as millet and beans. On the other hand, supporters of the old system want to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears over potential job losses.

Academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards an entirely new model of economic governance. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development: democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies key factors that are shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views among this population. A 2009 survey showed that almost one-third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they didn't understand it. This level of doubt is similar to that in the United States, where a similar number of people do not accept that humans evolved from earlier species of life.

In the past of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and in bringing them to Christ. A significant increase in the interest in creation science occurred in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event attracted a huge number of professors, church leaders and scientists.

The success of this event led to the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31 1981. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, which reported on its activities and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the country at universities and churches.

A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were keen on the concept of creationism that they raised money and secured funding to construct an enlightened museum on campus.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branches that hold seminars and give talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea
