Evolution Korea

South Korea's democracy is prone to populist tendencies. However, it is more stable than might be expected.

The country is seeking a new way of developing. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues to influence the society. There are indications of a secularist cultural trend forming.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of today's Koreans were able to survive by hunting and gathering wild food. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and created furs. These people formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metalworking industry, producing bronze tools and later iron tools.
