The democratic system in South Korea is susceptible to populist impulses. It's still better than we had hoped for.

The country is looking for an entirely new model of development. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after they began to cultivate crops such as millet and beans. They also raised livestock and created furs. They established tribal states in Manchuria, and then on the Korean peninsula. They also developed an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools and later iron tools. In 2333 BCE Gojoseon came into existence in the southern part of the peninsula. This state adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. During this period the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure in which a monarch and senior officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy while the rest of the population were peasants. The state collected taxes from the citizens and sometimes required them to serve in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.

By the end of this period the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje introduced elements of Confucian thought into its state belief system and made the male centered concept of filiopiety as a law in 1390 CE. In the name of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families and had to be obeyed and respected by all people, even their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, a nation that ruled from 918 until 1392 CE in the year 1392 CE, introduced to the world the Hangul Alphabet, based on the shapes created by the mouth when it pronounces. This greatly improved communication and led to an increase in the writing of Buddhist text. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was the first to be recorded.

Development in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been habitable since Neolithic times. Gojoseon was the first state to be recognized during the first half of 1st millennium BCE. Moreover, the northern region of the peninsula was ruled by the Balhae kingdom, which most historians don't consider to be a valid Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states arose in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje is the most powerful of these states, was diminished by the collapse of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern regions in Manchuria and the its western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo as well as the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a short period of time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms started to collaborate to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase its development model appears to be in flux. People who are shocked by the cost of the old system are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, capital and product markets. On the other hand champions of the old system seek to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and inflating fears of job loss.

Academic and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to the extent that these two trends are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article examines developments to date by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development: illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also identifies important factors that appear to influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey in 2009 revealed that nearly one third of respondents do not believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support evolution 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs and 17% claimed it was difficult to grasp. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States, where a similar number of people are not convinced that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on teaching college students and leading them to Christ. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in 1980, with a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. The event was attended by a large number of pastors, professors, 에볼루션 church leaders, and scientists.

The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The event was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times, 무료에볼루션 Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on the subject of creationism, which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.

One instance of an KACR success story was at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised funds and received support to build a small creationist museum on campus.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine called CREATION. The magazine covers a variety of topics that pertain to the science of creation. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has an organization of local branch offices that offer seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.

The evolution of South Korea

Baekje, a major regional power in the 4th century, expanded its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. This meant that it was constantly in conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies on the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye, a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. It also held control over a portion of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However, his rule was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and unified Goryeo, Baekje, 에볼루션바카라 and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was later under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
