Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be changed in order to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all tooltips of items. It is also used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

Using the item upgrading level can help players compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done using the item's level.

The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full description of the item, including its level. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the item level is calculated. Item Stats

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially advantageous in early game runs since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can spawn or be crafted by using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the weapon that is infused with hollow, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..

The performance of an upgrades is also influenced by the luck of the item. Every item has a success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
