Components
In the field of computer technology, an upgrade is a replacement of hardware or software with a new version that offers new functions or features. Upgrades are typically performed to make the system more efficient and more reliable or capable of handling greater amounts of data. Hardware upgrades include hard disk drives as well as motherboards. Upgrades to computers should always be compatible with the specifications of the computer being upgraded.
In Guild Wars 2, upgrade items are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons or trinkets to provide an attribute bonus or another effect when the equipment is in use. To accept a component, it must have an upgrade slot that is open and be above or equal to a specified level.
Components can be purchased from vendors in Night City or obtained by disassembling items that don't function. They can also be found randomly around the globe. Unlike weapons and gear, components can be purchased from vendors even if they're not level-appropriate or high-leveled.
There are a variety of components. Universal upgrades (such as gems) can be placed on all equipment, but they offer less bonuses than those restricted to a particular type. Jewels can only be used in trinkets. They also offer a larger bonus than any other upgrade.
There are also inscriptions, which are upgraded items that are only placed in a trinket, and can be used to create an experience multiplier. These are excellent for maximizing a character, as they're fairly inexpensive to purchase but they don't stack with other experience modifiers.
Infusions are a different kind of upgrade item upgrader kit that can be added to non-ascended and legendary armor, in addition to certain non-legendary back products. You can recover them by using the tool for extraction of infusions or salvaging with the Ascended Rescue Tool. An important thing to note is that upgrading an item with infusions can cause the item to be given a unique name. For example adding the Rune of Minor Vigor to an Tyrian Armor will cause it to display the name "Radiant Tyrian Armor." In the same way, an inscribed weapon will appear in its hover display as an Inscribed Weapon.
