Upgrades can increase the value of weapons and armor. However, upgrading magic and common equipment isn't worth the investment since uncommon or exclusive equipment will outclass it quickly.
Upgrades can be added to an item upgrader kit (please click for source) up to six times. Each upgrade will add to the gauge of the item.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to enhance an item and boost its capabilities. Glyphs are typically used to upgrade a weapon or armor however they can also be used to improve an earring, hat necklace, or any other item upgrades. Glyphs are sold at a variety of levels and can be purchased from vendors in the city of Deneb. They're costly, but they're worth it because they can increase the stats of an item upgrading.

Suffixes can also be used to alter grammatical rules for example, adding the suffix -ness to the word to make it an adjective or -ic for a noun to make it possessive.
