Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of extra damage, more AD or even more attaches.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to the more modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They boost the performance of the Best item upgrader they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components in them using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. The absorption of damage by a piece armor will increase as it is upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be more heavy.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For example, some upgrades will give the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade the item upgrader kit can receive, as shown below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades also require fees in order to be used. Weapons

Jewels

Jewels can be used to increase the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in weapons and armor. They can be created using the process of jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem and several reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gemstone is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The quality of a gem can be improved at the Jeweler, with stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boosts when inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create the highest levels of gems with the exception of rare and legendary ones which you must be at certain levels to gain. Like other upgrade components jewels are able to be swapped by a different jewel of the same kind without damaging it. However you can only swap out a jewel in an equipment piece once.

Utilizing more jewels in the movement will make it feel smoother and is usually done for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs provide a small boost in power and can be traded, but they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold, and also Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis can't be exchanged and can only be retrieved with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial, benefits. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be placed in any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional buffs and skills that are active when the hero is not in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active, and can also help make up for a lack of a strong team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with hero's ideal stats.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader in Slot) items that you will not replace soon. Then, you should consider any items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel for the item upgrader that is to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade as it's often better to upgrade just one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Top and mid players, on the other hand will pick a pink or green ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices can impact the ability of a hero to control the map.

Aside from the things mentioned above, players may also find other trinkets throughout the game in the form of awards and trophies. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story.
