Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model), they use smart mapping to create detailed floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.
The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on bare floors They are also adept in removing dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our first choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.
However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can work while you're at work, or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of seconds.
2. IRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has a self-emptying dustbin as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.
This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to provide cleaner and more efficient cleaning. The app lets you set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.
When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to remove and extend its mops. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach under low-lying furnishings and along baseboards. It also did a good job of cleaning a mix of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was superb, and it avoided fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles of cables.
It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we haven't seen in other robotic autonomous vacuum/mop combos.
3. IRobot Roomba X40
With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competition's boxes this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most appealing looking in our tests. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.
Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's loud that could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.
It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally capable and better-looking. If you're willing some more volume and some additional cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.
The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with obstructions or power cords.
Its automatic vacuum cleaner and mop has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house depending on how dirty those areas are.
For larger houses, it's worth opting for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one specific area of your home using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you own a lot furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be very useful.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more advanced than its price suggests. It's a pro at vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has a reciprocating motion, which cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.
The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or organize the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app offers a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
It can also reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also create a spot-cleaner that thoroughly cleans the area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive style, much like Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It does a good robot vacuum job vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is noisier than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
