Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Their decisions were influenced by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing life histories as well as their relational affordances. These findings have implications for pedagogy for L2 Korean assessment.

The MQ data were analyzed to identify the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data were classified according to Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the choices were compared to their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine whether they reflected pragmatic resistance or not. The interviewees also had to explain why they chose a pragmatic behavior in certain situations.

The results of the coding process are evaluated against the original RI transcripts to determine if they reflected the actual behavior.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

A recent study sought to answer this question by using a variety of experimental tools, including DCTs MQs, DCTs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were asked to reflect on and discuss their responses to each DCT scenario.

The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they were able to produce patterns that closely resembled natives. Furthermore, they were clearly conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors like their personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life histories. They also referred to external factors, like relational affordances. For instance, they discussed how their relationships with professors led to a more relaxed performance in regards to the linguistic and intercultural norms of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or penalties they might face in the event that their local social norms were violated. They were worried that their local friends might think they are "foreigners" and believe they are not intelligent.
