Upgrades to items can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all its leveled up advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players can wear, since PvP is limited at lower levels. The average level of the item is listed on the character sheet.

The level of an item can help players compare the potency of gear when choosing to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it's capable of dealing with. Comparing items from the inventory of a vendor can be done using the level of the item.

On PC, you are able to view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full description of the item, as well as its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different values and sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This process can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl which is usually quite close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major component of what determines the value of an item for players. The base stats of a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modification, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.

Upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. An item that is white or grey, for example, will only be upgraded once and items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which of the available stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within that range, unless it's an item upgrading that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that could be altered by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. As with the base equipment, this would have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the chances of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more useful in early game runs as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items can be purchased from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an item can be affected by the luck of that item. Every item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
