Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi key since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire.
