World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item level upgrade has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is because of how many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a popular measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet.

Using the item level will allow players to compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's a measure of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items in a vendor's stock can be done using the item's level.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its value. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of an item's level is made. One theory says that the level of an item is determined by an equation that determines the worth of an item's stats actually are. It is based on the fact that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is typically close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl since the size of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, such as by adding a level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modification which are then boosted by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item may increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. A grey or white item upgrader kit for instance, can only be upgraded one time, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.

Affixes are another way to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to provide items with extra damage or special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs) or to make them unique by adding a name.

All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item with a specific stat or reroll the affixes. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it is a unique item or the result of a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or choose which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players a chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than later ones because most players value more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck, or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be outfitted to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available at the store, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their success rate or prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item can influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade item overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
