Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like PvE damage and crit chance.

If the weapon's upgrade template is in %, the weapon will gain 3% of its previous damage for every time it's upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost increases as the level of the item rises.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. They can be acquired through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to devices that have slots. The item upgrades must be upgraded to a blue level before a component can be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are kind of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's used on (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, which lets players create stronger versions with the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they would require to reach the same level using standard methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence attributes of the weapon or armor. These upgrades can be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of an item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep upgrading their gear, even if they're unsure of how much they'll increase after a future reset.

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and put back in place without restrictions. The only exception is legendary equipment, which requires an Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and then re-install.

Each Glyph has a specific range of values that can enhance a stat by, and the value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can choose to replace it with another Glyph with the same rank or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase the glyphs with certain tools that allow unlimited use, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll require them to be put on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that boosts a specific set of stat nodes within a radius around the Glyph. This will either be +40 for one of your primary stats, or +25 for two of your secondary stats based on the Glyph.

Utilizing Glyphs Glyph will boost all nodes that are connected to it, and you should try to place your Glyphs near key nodes on the Graph to maximize the impact. For instance, a Druid should try to place their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes, however, you may also want to think about placing them near crucial damage nodes too.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to improve the performance of certain items by placing upgraded components into them. This is often referred to as "upping". Every upgradeable item has a level that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires different components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or obtained from NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields some Technology Points. These points can be used to leveling up an item. When enough points have been earned you'll be able to claim your upgrade and also receive the bonuses.

When an individual player improves an item upgrade, the base item will be replaced with the new item. This means that the same armor piece will get an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will also have a unique bonus. This can be a disadvantage in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you do not require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, provided that the player has enough reroll tokens to do so.
