How to Replace an audi tt key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the audi a3 spare key in a salvage shop or reprogram parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. 5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your vehicle. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and Audi a4 key replacement pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points.
