The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the Best item upgrader in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to more robust bases. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be put on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as gems, but offer higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, with the exception of inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from earlier versions. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up however, the materials needed don't increase as much.
