Upgrades to items are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

The use of more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is usually done for aesthetic reasons. Apart from improving performance, the diamonds create an area that is stronger than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These are a small perk and can be swapped freely but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded by the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can give your character many small, but valuable benefits. You can find them in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available from vendors as well as through the completion of road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinket players can unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to escape. The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any kind of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero is not in combat. This is especially true when you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item upgrading. It is more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.
