Costs
Upgrades have some associated costs. The first is the cost to perform the upgrade. The cost is based on the new level of the item and the number of perks it receives, and can be expensive. It can also be costly to upgrade an item to a higher level (such as Explorer > Champion or Veteran > Heroic).
The other is the cost of the materials needed for an upgrade. These are typically Power Dices (dropped from monsters 21+), Minerals and Erons or specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords Of Draenor Quests. The amount of these materials required can be seen in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
Upgrades to an item are an intricate process that requires time. It can take up to 8 hours, depending on the magnitude of the upgrade. The base stats of an upgraded item are calculated based on its new ilvl and other characteristics. This calculation determines the latest Armor Class bonus, damage dice, and other crucial statistics. In certain cases upgrades can provide additional benefits. These perks are available in a list.
Rarely, the new advantages gained will cost more than one perk slot; in these situations the upgrade will replace the most expensive perks. Sometimes, the upgrader will make other adjustments to an item, like changing the damage type of a weapon or or removing an unwieldy or operative property. These modifications are based on an item's ilvl, and may require special materials, like adamantine.
Success Rate
The basis for upgrading items is a chance, and like any random system there is an opportunity that the upgrade won't succeed. There are several methods to increase your odds of success. This includes the use of an item dubbed an Upgrade Pity, or the addition of extra materials to the upgrade.
The Upgrade Pity can be purchased from the NPC for crafting in Lost Ark. It increases the chances of an upgrade succeeding by some percentage. It is similar to the "luck bonus" that some items offer however it is more solid. It can be added to any weapon or armor and can be used up to three times.
It is also possible to add a range of additional elements to the upgrade, which increases its chance of success. These materials are displayed in a window located above the + button. However, there are limitations to this, and the highest amount of material that can be added is shown directly above the + button in the UI.
Another way to increase the chance of an upgrade succeeding is by using an item known as the Blacksmith Blessing or an upgraded version of it. This item is beneficial in the event that you have an item or weapon equipment that has reached the maximum level for its tier, or is close to it.
