WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrading upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher item upgrades level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to item upgrade owners in a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item level upgrade; moved here, slot and the current item level, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades offer discounts on Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations, including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via a variety of means which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and some new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less even when they belong to another set of gear.

The discount is available to all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade items. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an important part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System that was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

First, you should know that crests are only available for equipment that is that is of a particular rank. Each rank has distinct upgrade paths. The most basic and straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the more complex one may require as many as 20 crests depending on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader for the item such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and paths.

Using these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they have only one purpose. It is best to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the best gear you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
