Origins

Gojoseon was a state that was hierarchical where the monarch and other senior officials were members of the aristocracy of the land, whereas the majority of the population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these citizens and sometimes required them to join the army or take part in government projects such as building fortifications.
Onjo Prince Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje at the end of the time. The new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje adopted Confucian ideas into its state beliefs system in 1390 CE, and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety into a doctrine. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families. They had to be obeyed by all and respected by their children and grandchildren.
Goryeo, which would rule from 918 to 1392 CE established the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth when it was pronounced. The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times to. In all of them, Baekje was the most powerful state but its dynasty dissolved when Goguryeo was defeated in 676 CE leaving it with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.
The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territories. Silla with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.
As Korea enters a post-crisis era its development model appears to be changing. Those who are horrified by the enormous costs of the old systems advocate a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand, supporters of the old system are seeking to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears over potential job losses.
Academics and analysts are divided on the extent to which Korea's growth is being driven by these two trends. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including democratic democracies that are not liberal (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies some significant factors that may be shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their views among this group. A survey in 2009 revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they did not know what it meant. The level of doubt is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.
In the past, the majority of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. An increase in interest in creation science began in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event attracted a large number of pastors, professors, church leaders, and scientists.
The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31, 1981. The event was extensively covered in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.
KACR started publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of films and slides from ICR, as well as some books on the subject that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members lectured throughout the country in churches and universities.
A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. There, there were enough students fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised enough money and support to construct an on-campus museum featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branch offices that host seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.
Evolution in South Korea
In the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts and other style elements from overseas. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced with modern rock and roll and jazz. During this period the samulnori, or dance-dramas with masks were extremely popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and other instruments.
The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new paradigm of development. The new regime's main challenge is to find the right balance between the state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are examined in Chapters 3 and 4.
Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo, and other areas and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje was one of the major regional powers in the early 4th century expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. Consequently, it came into frequent battle with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies along the border.
The fall of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries saw powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of today's Jeolla province and 에볼루션 Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.
The rule of his was, however, short-lived. After Gungye was defeated by an influential local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as a successor state. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized ruling system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
