Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

It is common to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots won't cause harm as easily.

In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also get glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. The first trinket players can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small, but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with a slot for an upgrade which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting.
