Despite its limitations the DCT is a useful instrument to study the relationship between prosody, information structure and non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to manipulate the social variables that are related to politeness is a plus. This ability can be used to study the impact of prosody across cultural contexts.
In the field of linguistics the DCT has become one of the primary instruments for analyzing learners' behaviors in communication. It can be used to examine a variety of issues that include politeness, turn taking, and lexical selection. It can also be used to assess the phonological complexity of learners' speech.
Recent research utilized an DCT as an instrument to test the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were presented with a list of scenarios and asked to select an appropriate response from the options offered. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study investigated Chinese learners their pragmatic choices when they use Korean. It used a variety of experimental tools including Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions, and Refusal Interviews. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performances in RIs. The results showed that CLKs are more likely to defy native Korean pragmatism norms. The coding process was an iterative process, where the coders listened and discussed each transcript. The coding results were then evaluated against the original RI transcripts, which gave an indication of how well the RIs accurately portrayed the core behaviors.
Interviews for refusal
One of the major questions in pragmatic research is the reason why learners are hesitant to adhere to native-speaker pragmatic norms. A recent study sought to answer this question employing a variety of research tools, such as DCTs MQs, DCTs, and RIs. The participants were comprised of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. The participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs in their L1 or their L2. Then, they were invited to a RI where they were asked to consider their responses to the DCT situations.
The results showed that on average, the CLKs rejected the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their answers. They did so even though they could create native-like patterns. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relationship benefits. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated a more relaxed performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural rules of their university.
The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or consequences they could face if their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their local friends might perceive them as "foreigners" and believe they are unintelligent. This was a concern similar to the concerns voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the default preference of Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reconsider the validity of these tests in different contexts and in particular situations. This will allow them to better understand the effects of different cultures on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of students from L2. Furthermore, this will help educators create more effective methods for teaching and testing the korea's pragmatics.
