The Hidden Secrets Of Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best
How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
A robot vacuum can save you lots of time and hassle when it comes to regular cleaning. The best ones are adept at cleaning up dust light debris, cords and dust.
The more expensive models even clean your floors--though they still can't climb stairs. Look for models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazard avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

The best robots that we tested are efficient and easy to use and are able to cope with everyday debris. You'll also want a robot that can handle stairs and has adequate pick-up power on carpets. If you're looking for a robot that has additional features, you should consider a model that has smart robot vacuums mapping technology or an app that allows you to control it remotely.
Camryn Rabideau is a contributing reviewer and writer for shopping at PEOPLE who has tried dozens of robotic vacuums. She's a fan of the robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and refill the water tanks used by mopping robots. She's also a fan of the robots that are able to recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords so they don't trip when climbing steps.
In comparison to the top-rated models, this Black and Decker vacuum isn't as advanced in its object-avoidance capabilities and its navigation score is lower. It does however have an ample dust bin that doesn't require frequent emptying and a long battery life. In addition, it has an option that allows you to plan cleaning times and return to the place where it last stopped, making it easier to tackle larger areas. This model is an excellent choice for pet owners as it can avoid hair tangles and food particles.
In our tests, we observed that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined the LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify rooms and obstacles with a structured-light sensor to detect objects and detect edges. It can avoid stairs, liquid droplets, and furniture legs easily with this combination. It also has the ability to save up to four floor plans for later use. It can pause and resume the cleaning process at any time, meaning that you can continue doing chores while it does. The app offers the 3D image of your home, complete with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.
While this robot can't clean as well as our top-rated models, it is superior in removing fine debris like baking soda and sand and heavier items like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. Its only drawbacks are that it's not able to mop, and has a less impressive navigation system.
Best for Carpet
If you have carpeting, pick a robot vacuum with a high rating for carpet and rug ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models do a good robot vacuum job of removing dust that is embedded in carpets with low pile and a few do a decent job at cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. They aren't able to pick up small particles like an upright canister, and may miss dirt close to thresholds or baseboards.
For most carpeted homes the 2-in-1 robot vacuum is the best choice. You can swap out a cleaning bin for a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo, for instance, vacuums and a mops with circular pads that rotate at a speed of 200 rotations per minute. It detects and lifts the pads when it is in contact with carpet to prevent wetting the floor. You don't need to remove or replace them after each use. The Q Revo is also superior to other robot vacuum/mops at keeping away from obstacles such as rugs and thresholds and avoiding obstacles.
Another option that is worth considering is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which did exceptionally well in our tests and can be scheduled through the app to clean your home when you're away from home. It can be set to mop only and we were impressed by its excellent navigation on rug and floor surfaces and its ability to go up and over furniture. The Combo i5 also has a very long run time and great path planning for a device of this size.
If you're looking for a high-tech vacuum Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great alternative. It has a large dock that can last for weeks without having to be emptied. It also has amazing navigation and auto-emptying capabilities on carpets and bare floors. It's also got an intelligent mapping system that can be programmed to operate at certain times of the day (a useful feature that can keep mischievous kids and dextrous pets from causing havoc). The Shark has less suction power than some other robot vacuum/mop combos, but its still very effective in removing hair and pet hair. It is the best value of our top picks.
Best for Hard Flooring
Robot vacuums are a great option for hardwood floors since they are able to maneuver around obstacles and not damage the floor's surface. They are excellent at picking up dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They lack the suction power of the top canister or upright automated vacuum cleaner, which makes them unsuitable for deep cleaning upholstery or carpeted areas.
The most effective robots are those that are two-in-one, combining mop and vacuum to complete the job in one step. Find a model that has an onboard sensor that detects any changes in the flooring and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and lets it effortlessly transition from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.
If you have lots of hardwood floors in your home, you may want to consider a robot mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model features an efficient robot vacuum with intelligent navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it has the ability to mop as well. The sensors help it avoid stairs and other hazards so you don't need to worry about the bot plummeting down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.
When you need mops the Eufy S1 Pro is designed to actually wash hardwood floors with downward pressure rather than wipe them clean to get rid of light dust and dirt. Its reusable mop pads reduce the amount of waste, and reduce the spread of germs and can be cleaned in the docking station to save you time. The mop pads can also be cleaned and dried to stop the spread of mold.
The robovac is controlled via your smartphone, making it much easier to use. For instance you can use the app to set up a zone that the vacuum won't enter, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning sessions for certain areas. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that sucks debris through a trapdoor, and stores it in a bagless or disposable bin, meaning you don't have to empty the bin manually every time as you would with other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
Like the name suggests that these robots are to be used in small spaces. They have smaller bins that hold less garbage, and are more efficient than larger models when it comes to maneuvering tight corners. They can also fit under furniture, whereas larger robots are unable to reach. They are also less expensive than higher-end models, however you will have to empty their dirt compartments manually at the end each cleaning session.
A few years ago robotic vacuums experienced a major change. Manufacturers began to add sensors that allowed them to avoid household items that their traditional sensors might be stuck on or across. These improvements reduced the number times that our testers were required to clean up after a robotic accident.
However, the new sensors haven't solved all of the problems these machines have. The lower-end models are not able to tackle the same obstacles as older models, and they require some level of illumination in order to know where they are moving. If you are living in a dark space or have lots of furniture that is low-profile, think about buying a model that utilizes top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space as our top overall and runner-up picks do. This lets them work in the dark and avoid obstacles like stairs.
In addition to being able to work in the dark, these models can be set to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not when they're above them. It is still recommended to shield any mirrors that could interfere with this function however, since the lasers used by a LIDAR-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it is in another room.
Some of the models we recommend will allow you to create virtual no-go areas for areas you don't wish the robot to visit. This is helpful for those with pets or small children. These features aren't included on all the models we test, so be sure to read our full reviews of the models below before you make a purchase.
