Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.
Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used while you're at work, or at school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.
2. iRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in dealing with larger particles like pet hair. It also has a self-emptying bin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.
This high-performing mop and vacuum combo utilizes advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it also learns your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and set up zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average compared to other models.
If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to remove and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is perfect to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.
3. iRobot Roomba X40
The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks much like a Roomba model than the bulky models from the competitors. It's among our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).
It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.
Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, and cleans and dries the mop pads.
The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.
The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the house based on how dirty those areas are.
For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have large furniture. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very useful.
5. iRobot Roomba RX3
The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've examined. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that can be washed.
The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app also grants access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has strong suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for hair of pets. You can also set up a spot cleaning that intensely cleans a localized area.

It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we have tested. It also has an app that's not as intuitive, and a smaller base station that does not double as a bin for emptying.
