It's the only robot vacuum/mop to score an exemplary 10/10 in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.
As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.
Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they are.
For larger homes it's worth looking for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one specific area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have number of furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.
The iRobot application is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping that collects data on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
