South Korea's democracy is prone to populist impulses. It is still healthier than was expected.
The country is in search of a new development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors and as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend emerging.
Origins

Of them, Baekje was the most powerful of them all, but its dynasty ended by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE, leaving Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy thrived for some time.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea enters a post-crisis era its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are affronted by the immense cost of the old system advocate the need for a comprehensive program of liberalization in capital as well as labor and product markets. On the other hand the people who support the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments and by stoking fears of job loss.
Academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas shift towards an entirely new model of economic governance. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's development in terms of its political development that include democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also highlights the most important factors that appear to be driving these developments.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this group. A 2009 survey showed that nearly one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they did not know what it meant. The level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from lesser advanced species of life.
In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was focused on the education of students and the introduction of Christ to them. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event drew an audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.
The success of the event led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The inaugural event was widely reported in national newspapers, such as The Korea Times and 에볼루션 바카라 체험 Chosun Ilbo and 에볼루션 슬롯게임 (similar resource site) received wide attention.
KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group presented its own work and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. One instance of an KACR success story occurred at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and secured support to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It has also created branches in local offices that offer talks and 에볼루션 코리아 seminars to schoolchildren and other community groups.
The evolution of South Korea
In the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements imported from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. In the period of this transition the famous samulnori, also known as masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and other instruments.
Korea's new development model is being created in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The main challenge for the new regime is to find a balance between market-oriented and state-led economic policies. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining schemes which have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.
Founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and people from northern China. In the early 4th century, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. Consequently, it came into frequent confrontation with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies along the border.
The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. It also was in control of a portion of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju. He was a rival to Goguryeo.
However, his rule was short-lived. After Gungye was defeated by an influential local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was peacefully integrated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
