Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.
However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used when you're at work or going to school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you have to change the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of minutes.
2. IRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.
3. iRobot Roomba X40
With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the compact models This robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most appealing looking in our evaluations. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an exemplary 10/10 in our testing thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuum best we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.
The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you try to sleep.
It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it will cost you more and create more noise.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner that is similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dry mop pads.
The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.
Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.
For bigger homes it's worth looking for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you have a large furniture. Also the recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.
5. iRobot Roomba RX3
The RX3 is more advanced than its price suggests. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that can be washed.
The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app also grants access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It is equipped with an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction and sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is a bit louder than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
