This study investigated Chinese learners making pragmatic choices when using Korean. It used various experimental tools including Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions, and Refusal Interviews. One of the major questions in pragmatic research is why some learners decide to rescind the pragmatic norms of native speakers. The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures and penalties they could face in the event that their local social norms were not followed. They were concerned that their native interlocutors may view them as "foreigners" and think they were ignorant. These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in different cultural contexts. This will help them better understand the effects of different cultural contexts on the classroom behavior and interactions of students in L2.
