WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which will show a preview of the item upgrades at its next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item upgrade and current item upgrades level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item upgrader mod has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Many locations have upgraders for their items, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. Once a player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This is true even if those items are from another set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available after certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW players have a variety of options. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level Upgrade level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

First, you should know that Crests are only available to gear with a certain rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the more complex one can require as much as 20 crests depending on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by completing content at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities, or by completing dungeons and raids in any difficulty to earn lower-level gear or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons that have a high difficulty for gear in the endgame. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult however, the system will introduce a few modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, when a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them properly. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can locate and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to avail the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
