The stats of an item are improved by upgrading it, also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment provides an increase in linearity of any stat.

Upgrade components

The majority of upgrade components that are added to items cannot be removed or replaced without dismantling them, with the exception of legendary upgrades and equipment. However, if you have an unusable rune or glyph that hasn't yet been incorporated into your gear, you can move it to a different piece gear by using the upgrade Glyphs context menu within the Glyphs panel. This will create the new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.

You can remove any glyph with the help of a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. This will destroy the item within which it is placed, but you can recover the upgraded item with the glyph and its shards therefore it should not be considered a loss.
