Evolution Korea

The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than one would expect.

Origins

During prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet, beans and other crops. Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. The earliest evidence for human settlements is visible in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious items like amazonite jewellery being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, also known as dolmens and built of large stones in a single piece, are common in the country.

Gojoseon became the first political state to be recognized in the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. After that the peninsula was ruled by various states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCfrom 635 CE) including Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. In addition, the northern region of the peninsula was occupied by the Balhae kingdom, which the majority of historians do not believe to be a valid Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje, the most powerful of these states, was weakened by the collapse of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern regions in Manchuria, and its western region around Hwanghae Bay. The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. Silla with the aid of the Chinese, eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase the way it develops appears to be in flux. Those who are horrified by the enormous costs of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand, supporters of the old system attempt to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments and by exaggerating fears about possible job losses.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views to this group. A survey in 2009 found that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% said it contradicted their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they didn't understand it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was focused on the education of students and bringing Christ to them. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in the year 1980, following a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the keynote speakers. This event was attended by a large audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The meeting was covered extensively in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for the existence of God. It also translated several films and slides from ICR, as well as a few books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

A KACR success was witnessed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the funds and support needed to build a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the field of creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also created an organization of local branch offices that host talks and seminars to children and community groups.

The evolution of South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, and other foreign fashion elements. Similarly, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern rock and roll and jazz. The decline of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries enabled strong local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was a rival to Goguryeo.

However his rule was not long-lasting. After Gungye was defeated by an influential local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as an heir state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
