There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to get stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a great deal for those whose office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and works when you're at work or school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and effective at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxy units, this robot autonomous vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an easy mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's a noisy unit, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you try to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however it's more expensive and produce more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs the combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its automatic vacuum cleaner and mop has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with how dirty they are.

If you have a larger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice command. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Finally the recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd think from its price. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app also grants access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can get to corners and underneath furniture better. It also has a strong 8,000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for pet hair. And you can create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught in low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums we've test. It also has an app that's less intuitive and a small base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
