The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept at cleaning hair from dogs. However, they do have a few flaws however, which hinder them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.

Still, it's very good robot vacuum, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and you can use it when you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and ensure cleaner and more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to other models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mops. This helps prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. Its obstacle detection was top notch and it swiftly eluded fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically emptys into its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums it, something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the competitors. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our evaluations thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally powerful and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that is very efficient however it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features to help you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, and cleans and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of the combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out the floor plan and detect obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning robot mop and vacuum frequency for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For larger homes it's worth looking for a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home using the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you own a lot furniture. Finally, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It's a pro at vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating movement that is more efficient than most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run that collects data on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, arrange the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app also gives access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and under furniture more easily. It features a powerful 8000 Pascal suction, as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. And you can set up a spot cleaning that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it is more likely to be caught in low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we have test. It also comes with an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
