The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device that could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or best robot hoover Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up some more volume and some extra cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should delight most.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top competitors. The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. For larger homes it's worth looking for one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. For families with busy schedules recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd think from its price. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured application and an auto vacuum and mop-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance.
