The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. However, they have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great deal particularly if your office or home has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you are at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad for a dry one in minutes.

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles, like pet hair. It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the compact models this robot vacuums best vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive designs in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an exemplary 10/10 in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device that could be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to live some more volume and some extra cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It has a number of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home by using the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stair-mode is also useful. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than its price would suggest. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to create the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture better. It also has strong 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for pet hair. You can also create a spot-cleaner which will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and cheaper alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is noisier than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
