Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or at school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you need to clean the mopping pad, it can be changed for a wet one in minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has strong suction and self-emptying bin. This high-performing mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to dodge obstacles and pet waste and it also learns your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mop. This helps prevent cross-contamination. During testing, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop that could complete an entire house, finishing with the battery at 66 percent left. It also did an excellent job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically emptys into its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks like a regular Roomba rather than the boxes This mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive looking models in our tests. The latest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum best we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has a simple mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's a noisy unit, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the best automatic vacuum and mop robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than some of its premium rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes, it's worth opting for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home using the app or voice controls. A stair mode can be useful if you own a lot furniture. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It has a great vacuuming performance and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt for better performance. The app also grants access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It features a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. You can also create a spot-cleaner that thoroughly cleans a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and cheaper alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble adorable eyes. It is great at vacuuming, however it is more likely to be caught on low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums that we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
