In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the audi keyless go's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points.
