1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. As with other top iRobot models (including the top pick) they utilize smart mapping technology to design detailed floor plans that avoid home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also come with Carpet Boost, a feature that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept at cleaning dog hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to get stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. If you're required to clean the mopping pad, it can be changed for one that is wet in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles, like pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, though it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to remove and extend its mops. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could clean an entire home with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a great cleaning job on a variety of rooms and floors with various flooring types, including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is something we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the competition. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It comes with an intuitive mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's loud, which can be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally powerful and better-looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however, it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has a feature called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty those areas are.

This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice control. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have lot furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter robotic cleaner and mop than you would imagine from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It does a great job vacuuming, however it is more likely to be stuck on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums we have tested. It also comes with an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin to empty.
