Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.

When an item is upgraded, its stats increase in value. The value is the sum of all of its leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, dependent on who you employ and what you do. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

It is also used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to limit how much PvP gear players can use since PvP is not available at lower levels. Players can view their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell equipment players can look at the levels of the item. It's an excellent indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it will be capable of causing. The level of the item can be used to compare items when examining a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of an item's level is made. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values, and also that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.

This is not the only factor that influences the level of an item. The location of where the item was dropped may change its stats. For example, it could increase the item's haste or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The item's stats can make or break an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stats of a base weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modification that are in turn boosted by the player's level.

The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats on the item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a gray or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with the rare levels will be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

Another method of altering the stats on an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all shapes and sizes. The affixes are used to give items additional damage, special abilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs), or to differentiate them by adding a name.

All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the range, unless it's an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that can be modified by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for item upgrading comparison would not display all the possible stats gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade item items. It simply gives players the chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more useful in the early game than later ones since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level of the item level upgrade and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Moreover some items, such as the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased from the shop, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The performance of an upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
