How to Replace an audi tt key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and replacement audi A3 key then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. 5. Tachometer
